The word Capital brings to mind “A city set on a hill.”  On July 4, 1776 The Declaration of Independence was signed and the United States of America was born.  This day our nation is 235 years old.  Since then, many things have happened… all under God’s gracious providential hand.

We’ve elected 44 Presidents… fought a Civil War… engaged in many military conflicts… sent men to the moon… endured moral revolutions… made great strides in medicine and technology… and many others too numerous to name.

But for me, this day is not about our accomplishments… it is not about men or their endeavors… nor is it about the social and moral climate of the nation.  No, for me this is a day to look past a flag to the one who sits on the Throne of Heaven.  It is because of Him that America has been… is… and will be (For whatever length of time).  As it is written in 1 Samuel 2:1-8…

My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord.  My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. 2 There is none holy like the Lord; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. 3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed. 4  The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength…. 6 The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 8  He raises up the poor from the dust…

Daniel 2:20 Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. 21 He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; 22 He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.

Romans 13:1 There is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he (Government) is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he (The government) does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

Maybe I’m the odd one around here, but I think it better to thank God for His blessings.  I think it wise to honor God for His blessings and favor to this point in our history.  I believe it wise to give honor to Him, for had He not will good (As per the Scripture above) we would have already gone the way of the “great” Philistine nation…
