No one wakes up expecting the unexpected, good or bad. I’m talking about those things that come out of the blue… weren’t on your radar… things you would never have imagined “in a million years.” Unexpected blessings, and life altering tragedies, can happen in the time it takes to look at your cell phone… open your door… opening an email. Whether it is finding $20 in your pocket or getting a letter from the IRS, things happen we don’t expect.

Truth: Eventually something substantive will happen to you (Good or evil) you did not expect.

Question: When the unexpected happens, how will you handle it? Answer: By whatever is already in your heart.

Waiting until a substantially unexpected event occurs is putting yourself behind the curve, missing the boat. You will find yourself scrambling if you have not prepared (Emotionally and spiritually) for the unexpected. Consider…

Ps 5:3O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

Pr 24:27 Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.

1 Pet 3:15 But in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you…

Mt 24:44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Take thought of Mt 22:44. That event will be eternally traumatic for some and eternally a blessing for others. The difference? Their preparation for the unexpected event. That is the Ultimate unexpected event… but what about those we deal with until then? Consider 2 Tim 4:2-5…

Be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

To be spiritually ready for the unexpected: 1) Walk with God daily by reading His Word systematically, 2) Spend time daily talking to and listening to God through prayer, 3) Make worship a regular part of your life… expressing thankfulness to God, singing in your heart to him, 4) Engage with other believers on a regular basis about Godly matters AT LEAST AS MUCH AS YOU DO regarding college football or your favorite passtime!
