“I don’t know how much worse things can get! Jesus must be about to return!” Sadly that is the way some think. Every news story they twist and turn to make it about Jesus’ return. It is good to be ready… waiting & watching… BUT, it can get out of hand! To me it seems like too many Christians are a theological Chicken Little regarding the return of Christ. As for “how bad things are” being a signal of Jesus’ return, it has been as bad, and worse, socially and culturally before now. AND Jesus said not to get all worked up about it! Consider…

There is a reason it was called “The Wild West,” “The Gay 90s,” and “The Roaring 20s.” During prohibition the gangs and Mafia ran wild, society seemed to be imploding. In the early 20th Century influenza killed millions (Plague? Yes.). There was a thing called THE Plague that killed up to 1/3 of the European population. Remember a thing called “The Dark Ages?” What about The Hundred Years War… World War 1… World War 2? In 1948 Christians said the Jews returning to Israel meant Jesus was about to return. They said the same thing in 1967 and 1972 about the wars with Israel in the Middle East. Every time there is a flare up in the Middle East some Christians start yelling, “Look up! Jesus is coming!” Just before The First Great Awakening in the 1700s morality in America was very low. In the early ’80s Christians said AIDS was God’s judgment on America signaling Jesus’ return. And I could go on…

Think with me about a few things please…

First… there is nothing you can do about when Jesus will return. When He returns, he will return. BE READY.

Second… please don’t make the return of Christ the ONLY or BIG MAIN THING in your conversations. Some do and they end up looking silly. If you do, you are leaving out a lot of good theology.

Third… Pray for revival and awaking. Live a quiet and holy life. Feed the hungry… clothe the poor… seek justice. Encourage the brokenhearted.
