Do Not Rese.jpgMy brother in law has been in intensive care with his life haning in the balance since early Saturday morning.  The doctors were very clear that things did not look good.  At one point on Saturday afternoon the physician asked the family to get together and make a decision about D.N.R. which stands for “Do Not Resuscitate.”

Beth, her boys Dawson, David, Daniel, and Dalton… along with Kenny’s mother and dad… were asked to make one of the most difficult decisions anyone can ever make.  They had to decide if heroic measures were to be taken for their husband, dad, and son if a “cardiac event” took place.

There was one test performed on Kenny that had not yet been evaluated… the EEG.  This is a test that determines if there is any brain activity.  That test would let the family know if Kenny was still with them even though he couldn’t communicate.  The results of that test would be a huge determining factor in regards to their D.N.R. decision.

There was only one problem… the neurosurgeon was gone for the day and wouldn’t be back until Sunday.  But their decision had to be made right then.  It couldn’t be put off.  Now…

We’ve all heard “It’s not WHAT you know but WHO you know that matters,” right?  Well… I don’t agree.  Let me explain.

One of the people who was there reminded the family that Kenny was friends with another physician at the hospital.  Someone else said they were good friends with this physician’s wife.  To make a long story short… the person who knew the physician’s wife who knew the neurosurgeon decided to make a call (Thank you God for cell phones).  The wife of the physician called her husband who then called the neurosurgeon who then decided to come back in and read the EEG.  The EEG showed brain activity… which made the family’s decision easier.

Now for the lesson.  What mattered was NOT that Kenney knew the physician or that someone there knew a physician’s wife… or that the physician knew the neurosurgeon.  What mattered was that the neurosurgeon knew the physician who’s wife knew the person that called her.  Do you see the difference?

It’s not who YOU know that matters… it’s who knows YOU that matters!

There are a lot of people who “know” Jesus.  But that doesn’t matter… not one bit!  What matters is whether or not Jesus knows the person!!  Consider Matthew 7:21-23…

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

What matters in eternity when we stand before Jesus is whether or not HE knows us!  It’s a personal relationship that begins and ends with HIS knowledge and intimacy with us… not us knowing things about Him.  Don’t be deceived that knowing Jesus or knowing about Jesus is what saves us.  It’s HIS knowledge of us that determines salvation.

As for my brother in law Kenny… he’s doing slightly better, but he has a long way to go.  Please be in prayer for him.
