I am currently reading a book title, “Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices” by Thomas Brooks.  You can click here to purchase a copy if you’d like after reading an excerpt.

Christ, the Scriptures, your own heart, and Satan’s devices are the four prime things that should be first and most stidied and searched.  (We are to) do our best to discover the fullness of Christ, the emptiness of the creature, and the snares of the great deceiver.  Whatever sin the heart of man is most prone to, that the devil will help forward.  (Pages 15-16)

That last sentence grabbed me full force.  Whatever sin I am most prone to is what Satan will use in an attempt to get me to fail.  He will also use whatever sin you are most prone to as he tempts you also.  Consider another quote of great encouragement…

It is not hasty reading, but serious meditating upon holy and heavenly truths, that make them prove sweet and profitable to the soul.  It’s not the bee’s touching of the flower that gathers honey, but her abiding for a time upon the flower that draws out the sweet.  It is not he that reads the most, but he that meditates the most, that will prove the choicest, sweetest, wisest, and strongest Christian.  (Pages 21-22)

It was from this attitude that Mr. Brooks wrote one of the most insightful books about the method, manners, and means Satan uses to lead us to sin.  Along with his evaluation he also give some of the most practical advice you can find about how to outwit our adversary.

I’m just getting started, but I’m sure that as I continue to read I will pass along nuggets of truth for your encouragement.
