YOU have character flaws you ignore, rationalize, justify, and refuse to admit. Everyone else sees them… your friends put up with them… people talk about them when you aren’t around just as you do about others when they aren’t around. Blind spots are where our idols reside. Blind spots are the sin Christians are called to crucify. Ignoring blind spots is foolish (Picture by Lee Mclaughlin).
“There are none so blind as those who will not see” (Quote from Andy Griffith Show). “If everyone is out of step but you, maybe YOU are the one out of step!” (Unknown).
Jesus confronted spiritual blindness often (Mt 15:13-14; 23:16, 19, 24; Lk 6:39-42). Then consider what is recorded in Luke 11:34-36 from Jesus…
Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.
One of the most difficult things anyone can ever do is ask God to reveal to them their spiritual blind spots… their character flaws (Ps 139:23-24; 2 Cor 13:5; 1 Cor 11:31). IF we desire to become more like Jesus… to grow in our faith… to mature in Christ… to be conformed to the image of Christ, then we MUST deal with our blind spots. And know this before you embark on such a journey, it will be painful… HOWEVER… consider what is found in Hebrews 12:4…
In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. 9 Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 He disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Tomorrow, God willing, there will be a process for addressing blind spots.
