“Chin music” is when in baseball a batter stands close to the plate and the pitcher throws a high inside fastball to make the batter back up. Thus the picture to the right is “chin music.”
There is another kind of “chin music.” This one is spiritual in nature. It happens when a believer in Christ steps up to the plate for God. It is then that the “pitcher” (Satan) says… “Okay big boy… you want to take a swing? Let’s see if you can handle THIS?!” Then he throws a high inside fast ball like we’ve never seen before… to intimidate us… to make us back off the plate… to see if he can bring fear into our lives so we won’t “go yard for God” (Hit a home run).
Many times it works. The Christian will bail out… strike out… lose their boldness… and possibly never step into the batter’s box again. As we find it written in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
What does spiritual chin music look like? It’s when you have opposition… hardship… trials… and difficulty… when you have committed yourself to live for God’s glory! It is when as a direct result of deciding to honor God with your life that things start happening that make it hard… or harder… to carry out what you want to do for Jesus. You can know you are getting some chin music from the Adversary (1 Pet 5:8b) when life would be simpler and easier if you just attended church… sang in the choir… gave a little money every now and then RATHER THAN talking to your co-workers and family about Jesus and their walk with God. Then people start making your life hard when you are innocent of their accusations and are just trying to serve Jesus. Expect spiritual chin music not long after a spiritual victory (Satan doesn’t want you to start a rally {Revival}).
I once read somewhere, “Satan is willing to hold the ladder for anyone who will climb on the shelf for God.” He offers, “You leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone. You don’t bother me and I won’t bother you. Deal?” Many are willing to shake hands on that one. Don’t do it! Do NOT make a deal with the Devil. Stay in the batter’s box and connect with the ball (So to speak).
