Prayer is not powerful, it is powerless. It is the God who answers prayer that is all powerful.

An unbeliever’s prayer is impotent. Prayers prayed by anyone who is not a believer in Jesus Christ are devoid of power of any kind. Remember the 450 prophets of Baal who prayed for hours as challenged by Elijah? Nothing happened. Then Elijah prayed and fire fell from heaven (1 Kings 18:20-39). It wasn’t the power of PRAYER, but WHO answered prayer that made the difference!

We aren’t to work our butts off THEN ask God to pick up the slack. He is the before… during… and after. If we don’t approach everything in life from that perspective we’re already cooked. As Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do NOTHING” (John 15:5). Before the event, we rely on Jesus. During the event, we rely on Jesus. After the event, we rely on Jesus. Why? Because without him we can’t do or accomplish ANYTHING! Sometimes we fail miserably… and that is him reminding us of who IS and who isn’t.

Prayer is the open admission that without Christ we can do nothing. Prayer is turning away from ourselves to God in the confidence that he will provide the help we need.
