The first weekend of the 2009 college football season has come and gone… with many events to reflect upon. Here are some for rumination and discussion…
Alabama beats Virginia Tech. No one can blame accuse either school for opening up with a pansy opponent to insure a win. On that fact alone it is worth considering that Bama should leap frog to #1. Roll Tide!
Auburn beats Louisiana Tech. No one blames Auburn for opening with this school. La Tech had a good season last year and was a minimal threat. But a first year coach needs an opening win… and got it.
Boise State v. Oregon OR Blount v. Hout. A long touted game ended up seeing Boise win at home on the blue turf. But the win was overshadowed by a sucker punch from a duck (Blount) that laid out a stallion (Hout). Sad thing is that Blount was suspended for the rest of the seasons… his senior year… and he was hoping to go pro. LESSON: Decisions have consequences and there are not enough “I’m sorry” statements to correct a rash act.
“I should have gone pro when I had the chance!” (Sam Bradford, Oklahoma QB). Due to a shoulder injury, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner may be out for the season… the season he had a chance to forego in order to go pro and make millions. What the future prospects are for Sam Bradford in the NFL is yet to be seen. But he has to be wondering… “I wonder if I made the right decision?”
So what are the gleanings we can find here?
Reflection #1: Choosing a tough opponent and being victorious lends credibility.
Reflection #2: One rash act in a moment of passion can change the direction of your entire life.
Reflection #3: It is possible to make a decision with the best of intents and it blow up in your face.
