Here are a few thoughts to contemplate before you partake of the Lord’s Supper…

In John 6 it is recorded Jesus said… (6:51, 53-56)

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 53 Truly, truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man & drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh & drinks my blood has eternal life, & I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, & my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh & drinks my blood abides in me, & I in him.

Jesus’ point is that a person must totally embrace who He is & why He came from heaven. They must totally surrender their life to Him. Every fiber of their being must be devoted to Him. Period.

In observing the Lord’s Supper, the believer is stating publicly & anew their devotion to Christ. They are affirming He is their Savior, Lord, & God (As Thomas did in Jn 20:28). The Lord’s Supper is an act of worship to the Trinity celebrating Jesus paying God’s eternal wrath toward sin.

Sin is universal. Everyone has sinned because of being born sinners. As it is written in Ro 3:10…

None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one u’stands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. 13 Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive. The venom of asps is under their lips. 14 Their mouth is full of curses & bitterness. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin & misery, 17 & the way of peace they have not known. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

The devastating effects of sin are far reaching & total. Consider what is written about us & our sin in Mt 12:36 & Ja 2:10…

Mt. On the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak

Ja. Whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.

Every sin, regardless of its magnitude to us, is a affront to God… worthy of eternal wrath! Every sin is a “BIG DEAL” to God because it is an assault on His holiness & disregard for His commands.

Because of our sin, salvation is impossible. As Jesus said in Mt 19:25-26, “When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, ‘Who then can be saved?’ 26 But Jesus looked at them & said, ‘With man this IS impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

God did NOT come up with His plan of salvation when Adam sinned. God did NOT look into the future to see who would believe & then write their name in His Book of Life. BEFORE creation God had a plan… IN ETERNITY PAST, God purposed His will to take place. Listen to Scripture…

2 Tim 1:8 Do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord… 9 who saved us & called us to a holy calling… which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began

Rev 13:8 All who dwell on earth will worship (the beast), everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain.

The Lord’s Supper is an act of worship. It is affirmation of God’s eternal plan of salvation. It identifies the participant as part of the Body of Christ. It celebrates Jesus’ sinless life… His substitutionary death… burial… resurrection conquering death… and eventual return. And thus the meal is a holy act of worship.
