There is a time when over eating is good… when it is actually commanded by God. Consider Psalm 81:10 et al…
I am the Lord your God… Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Jesus in Matthew 5:6)
For (God) satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. (Psalm 107:9)
Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. (Jesus in John 6:27)
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (John 6:35)
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (Jesus in John 6:51)
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation… (1 Peter 2:2)
Honestly, if you are a believer in Christ… does 1 Peter 2:2 describe you? Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? Do you often long to read, meditate on, and feast on Scripture? One of Billy Graham’s regrets is…
I would also spend more time in spiritual nurture, seeking to grow closer to God so I could become more like Christ. I would spend more time in prayer, not just for myself but for others. I would spend more time studying the Bible and meditating on its truth, not only for sermon preparation but to apply its message to my life. I’d study more and preach less.
If Billy Graham says those things, might it be a hint to us? But then there will come a day (Already here?) when a famine will come… “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” (Amos 8:11). This is happening now. There is a dearth of solid doctrine from pulpits. So what do you do? Be a glutton on God’s Word.
